Living in the Material World

A couple of months back my sister lost her diamond set mysteriously. She had gone to another city for around 3 weeks and returned to find out her cupboard was unlocked and the casing which guarded the jewellery was empty. The police questioned the room-mates and the domestic help, but in the end the cased was closed and sent into a limbo.

For a few days my sister was inconsolable. Living alone in a foreign city, she had never had any hiccups until this. This incident provoked a thought in my mind. Is our love for objects so ginormous? I tried to calm her down by saying that it was just a materialistic thing, and we should not cry for them. Lord Buddha went to the extent saying we should not be emotionally attached to human beings, then the diamond set was just an inanimate object. In a few days, she got over it and my dad bought her a new set. I was happy that my philosophy worked.

A similar incident happened to a friend. He lost his laptop in college. He was totally devastated in the aftermath. He went into a depression. Listening to songs like ‘Who Wants to Live Forever’ and ‘Yesterday’ all the time. I know, even I can’t live a single day without my laptop, but I still thought, what is the big deal? How can people develop such a bond with things that are bought.

The other day I was staying at my brother’s house for the night and went out for a walk all alone. I had planned for a perfect night, with my book and i-Pod within my sight and Germany v/s Portugal just a few hours away. So while walking I was pre-occupied with exciting thoughts and was walking frenziedly. A few minutes later I randomly checked my pocket and had a mini cardiac arrest there and then. I had lost my cellphone. Now, this is not an uncommon event for most of the people, and usually in the end the cellphone turns out to be in some other pocket. That is what I expected for the first few moments, but it was clear that I had indeed lost it. Shattered, I went back into the house and tried to focus my mind on reading. I called my parents through the landline and said my phone’s battery was dead.

Now came the part of self-consoling. I ate a lot of ice-cream to ease out the stress, but nothing helped. In the end I switched off the light, laid down on the bed, put the earphones and started the mental strife. The brain, and the dark side of the brain, as I fondly call it, started the debate, making immaculate conclusions. It started with the lecture on materialistic things. I tried hard to make myself understand what I so neatly explained to my sister. But when the nail is in your heart, only then you can feel the real pain. I had wet my eyes and the heart ache was strong.

A cellphone becomes a daily part of your life. It is your closest friend, anywhere and everywhere. We almost care for it like it was a baby. Keeping it close and safe, charging it regularly, showing affection to it, shouting at it and finally using it to kill time. Hours after I had lost my cellphone I still kept looking for it to see the time, every slight vibration made me think it was it. All I kept thinking was about all the things I had lost with my phone. The numerous contacts, heart to heart chats, high scores in games and a perfect mp3 collection, they were all gone. It had become clear, materialistic things do become an important part of your life.

People mostly face these situations at some part of their life and it is always painful. For example people who lose their wallets, don’t exactly cry for their money, but for the loss of a friend who always stayed in their pocket. Losing a laptop now seems an occurrence so harsh, I’ll rather go for a death sentence.

Although it isn’t right, but loving the materialistic things is inevitable, unless you are determined to follow Buddha and attain Nirvana(I’ll prefer LSD). The love does not happen because you ‘buy’ these things with hard earned money, but because as time flies you develop a relationship with them and become dependent on them. When something becomes a part of your daily routine it is hard to imagine a life without it.

The pain is short lived and vanishes with a replacement, but the enormity of those heart aches proves that though we claim otherwise, we all are living in the material world, and it is hard to cut threads.

The Heart Symbol : Rare Facts

The heart has long been used as the symbol of  love and passion. 14th February, the Valentine’s Day, sees millions of cards, letters, balloons etc., with the spectacular red colored heart symbol. There maybe millions of ways to impress your partner but this simple red curve can beat any symbol of  love.  But ever wondered what the heart-symbol actually means? Or how the symbol originated? Well don’t get too surprised but the truth is in this post.

First of all we all know it is nowhere near the shape of the real heart, which has a ugly fist shape. Then we think why would the ancestors think about such an organ of our body which we never see in our lifetime.  So the best option available is that the symbol of heart represents a stylisation of the vagina or the inverted head of a male penis.

A perfect heart?

Inverted Penis

Yes, the heart symbol seems to have first represented lust before it became associated with love.  One thing that lays the base of this weird theory is the myth about the silphium drug, an ancient contraceptive. There are reports that its seed was perfectly heart shaped. The plant was considered so important during the Roman Empire that it was imprinted on the coins. The plant was ‘used up’ to extinction. Another fact that shoots up the importance of this theory, Silphium has similarities to the word Sylph – meaning slender and desirable young woman – a virgin.

Silphium Coin

Now the question, how come the word ‘heart’ got associated it with the symbol. For that we have a brittle explanation. Like the word heartwood is linked with the inner part of a tree, same way there are citations that ‘heart’ could mean ‘virginity’ in older times. Another example that proves the fact is the symbol of the cupid, a heart “pierced” by an arrow with tiny droplets of blood. The droplets of blood represent the breaking of the hymen and the loss of virginity. The arrow is also the definitive phallic component of the Male symbol – Mars – the erect arrow.  In plain language it is a vagina penetrated by a penis.

So, this theory is yet standing on wooden sticks, but it has some truth behind it. So next time you send a heart symbol to your lover remember you are giving an invitation for an intercourse! We’ll leave you with this quote while you think about this :-

“Love is just a system for getting someone to call you darling after sex” Julian Barnes

A Psalm of Life- H.W. Longfellow

A Psalm of Life is an amazing poem from H.W. Longfellow, which gives us an insight of what we are deep down in our lives and what should we do to sublimate all the evil within and lead a perfect life. A life which sets an example for the generations to come so that when they get ship-wrecked during the journey of life, they have our footprints to follow to the ultimate destination.

The Wonderful World

TELL me not, in mournful numbers,

Life is but an empty dream ! —
For the soul is dead that slumbers,
And things are not what they seem.

Life is real !   Life is earnest!
And the grave is not its goal ;
Dust thou art, to dust returnest,
Was not spoken of the soul.

Not enjoyment, and not sorrow,
Is our destined end or way ;
But to act, that each to-morrow
Find us farther than to-day.

Art is long, and Time is fleeting,
And our hearts, though stout and brave,
Still, like muffled drums, are beating
Funeral marches to the grave.

In the world’s broad field of battle,
In the bivouac of Life,
Be not like dumb, driven cattle !
Be a hero in the strife !

Trust no Future, howe’er pleasant !
Let the dead Past bury its dead !
Act,— act in the living Present !
Heart within, and God o’erhead !

Lives of great men all remind us
We can make our lives sublime,
And, departing, leave behind us
Footprints on the sands of time ;

Footprints, that perhaps another,
Sailing o’er life’s solemn main,

Destiny Ahead

A forlorn and shipwrecked brother,
Seeing, shall take heart again.

Let us, then, be up and doing,
With a heart for any fate ;
Still achieving, still pursuing,
Learn to labor and to wait.

Saint Valentine!

The sky of love embraced the new sunshine,
When light was shone by saint valentine,
With the heart of love,
And hand of god above,
He preached the way to god,
condemning the blooded sword,
When Claudius II outlawed the institution of marriage,
The saint! sang in disparage.
When every head bowed down,
The love feed saint made a holy sound,
With his quill and his will,
His beliefs stood firm and still,,
He moved hearts and souls of men to righteous path,
Surely he hadface the king’s wrath,
He said nay,
To his lords foray,
His bodywas then sent to a jail,
As humanity was left alone to wail,
But his soul could not be caged,
As, there was to be his final act staged,
There he mellowed down the jailer,
As hes love turned the curer,
His pursuit of love took him to his fate,
As it got him his “blind” date,
The jailer’s daughter,
His heart finally got wet in the enchanted water,
But his caper was to come to an end,
As it was the king himself, his fiend,
Sentenced to death!
Hang him until his last breath!
Oh nay! The sun of love was again to be orphaned,
But no, the destiny played a coy,
A letter came to his lover….
The love from that day matured its shine
As lettered was signed…
“From your Valentine”

For the awakening

A cry to the lands of the normal people,
A day would come when your faith would cripple,
The songs of nightingale would shout out blasphemy,
Befitting your belief, your life your irony,
A day might come when the sun won’t shine,
Shivers up your spine!
Your God! Your Pride!
Your Shame! Your Mind!
Blasphemy! Blasphemy!
Burn them down, your false humanity and your coveted tyranny,
For love and hate,
For your sordid faith,
Break Out! Break Out!
For, a day would come when the numbers won’t count,
The debts won’t mount,
And a day would come when your heart would beat,
Your soul trimmed down, now loving and neat,
Governments will fall,
No phone connects your call,
The silence would speak,
Gather you all , let your feelings creak,
For, a day would come, whose night won’t end.

A pain, for the god to suffer

“Whenever you are in doubt, just close your eyes, fold your hands and ask god for the answer. Because god, my son, is the ultimate power. If sometime, someday he is late in giving a reply, it means he wants to you to try and search for the answer yourself.”, the words of his dead mother echoed in the mind of Thomas as he sat by her grave, sobbing emphatically.

“But ma, where should we look for the answer, if someday we are in that situation”, Thomas had replied.

“The Universe is very big my child, its infinite. But if your heart is true, you may find infinity and there at that moment you would know The Truth.”, Thomas could see the smile on his mothers face when he closed his eyes.

Thomas’ mother, the Queen, had died of cancer a week ago. His father had already been dead for as much time Thomas had been alive. Therefore he was left orphaned, with his seventeen year old brother, who was now crowned the new king. George loved his mother a lot but this new responsibility had given him no time to mourn for the loss. But Thomas, who was just nine years old was completely heart broken.

Since the death of his mother, he had spent hours sitting in the Church and asking Jesus why did he take his mother with him. He never stopped crying, because the tears gave him a warmth, similar to his mother’s kiss.

But failing to get any answers, he lost all hope. That day he threw a burning candle at the statue and ran away from the Church. He had mixed emotions as he moved his little feet quickly towards the gate. One moment he felt happy that he had challenged god, the other he felt a strong fear that the ultimate power might destroy him, there and then. He reached the cemetery, turned around and had a sigh of relief. No one was following him, so maybe the god in the church is just a lifeless stone, he thought.

He sat there for a long time. Pondering over what all had happened and how he could reason with it. He thought maybe his mother didn’t teach him everything, maybe there were more secrets of the world, the secrets which even the ultimate power wouldn’t know. Suddenly he heard the noise of approaching cavalry. The soldiers had come to the cemetery. Leading them was the King. He jumped down from his horse, walked towards Thomas and hugged him. He ordered the soldiers to move back to leave both of them alone.

“Oh, my brother, you need to move on, my little sibling.” said King George.
Thomas bowed to him and said,
“But Your Majesty, I can’t forget her, I won’t be satisfied until god answers my questions and gives a reasonable explanation”
“Oh! You poor thing, you should not talk that way about god. Now I believe it is you who started the fire in the Church. If the Archbishop comes to know about it, you would be hanged. Now listen to me very carefully, in this kingdom, you need to follow the rules, like you have always done. The most important of all is that your actions, by any means, should not hurt religious sentiments.”

“But George, I am sorry, Your Majesty, mother always said that god helps those in doubt. Now when I am in doubt, why has he been hiding? My heart won’t accept this”

“Thomas, everything will be alright, you just come with me. We will look for answers together, but right now lets go to our Palace and have a moment of peace.”

He made Thomas sit behind him on the horse and they started riding. The soldiers were following him. Thomas hugged his brother from behind, resting his little head on his strong back. There was a strife going on his mind, his heartbeat was heavy. In confusion, he jumped from the horse, got up on his feet and started running. George turned his horse to see what had happened, as the soldiers decided to follow Thomas. George signaled them to stop,
“Let him go, lets see if he really can find an answer”

***

It was a very cold winter night. There was no signs of life outside as little John sat on the porch of his house. He was crying, the Emperor had arrested his parents, just one week before his favorite festival, Christmas! He didn’t know what crime they had done, but he had heard that they were held guilty because they believed in love and god. He had also heard that arrests like this were made every year during the time of festivals. It was the first festival for John in the Big City, as he called it. He had been very excited because the last eight Christmas’ of his life were celebrated back in the very small town, where he used to live. But all his hopes seemed to be lost now, because of peculiar reasons.

History said that thirty years ago, the younger son of the Royal Family, had returned after disappearing suddenly, a few days after his mother’s death. Emperor Thomas, as he was called now, overthrew his elder brother, George, to claim the title for himself. On the day of his coronation he said that during twenty years of his life he had searched for The Truth in almost all parts of the world. He had reached a conclusion that there is no god in the world, a man decides his fate himself.
“Commit a sin, there will be no god to punish you, do a charity, there will be no god to reward you. Every action of man, in his lifetime, effects him the most. And remember one thing, love is the most painful drug in life, so I have planned to eradicate love from the face of earth.”
Now the Emperor had developed a deep hatred for love and he considered all religions a source of misery. Therefore he decided to declare activities related to religion as offense and he roamed throughout his kingdom warning people to stay away from love. The first one to break the law was his brother, George. He was hanged to death.

John was trembling with cold, the snow had started melting. It was then he saw a red colored rose in his garden. It was almost dead. The petals were cold and dry, John touched it lightly. He felt pity for it and went inside his house to find something to help it. He melted some ice on the stove and poured the water in its roots. He was amazed by the way he finished the task. He had always requested his mother to let him burn the stove, but she always refused.

Now, he felt happy to be home alone. Doing all the things he always wanted to, but was subdued by his parents. The rose gave him inspiration. He slept all alone on the big bed, in the big quilt.

The next day was a bit warmer than the previous, yet too cold to be in festive mood. John woke up late, still rubbing his eyes, he went out to see the rose. He was astonished to see that it felt better and happier now. He spent more time with it, it became his silent friend. With each day getting warmer and John taking good care of it, the rose was now in a blooming stage.

Finally, it was Christmas Eve. Now John realized that he was missing his parents. He had finished all the cereal, the radio seemed more of a noise to him and he had no presents to keep under the Christmas tree. He went out and sat by the rose. He started talking to it.

“ I have to admit now I am missing my parents a lot. The house looks so scary from inside. What should I do, I am in pain.” , John started crying, his heavy teardrops were falling in the roots. John didn’t speak anymore, he sobbed continuously for a few hours and dozed off right there, beside the red rose.

It was Christmas! And luckily that day the sun came out, after almost a month of hibernation. The snow was being cleared, the Big Town looked like heaven on earth.
Where in normal cities, the day started with Church bells tolling and the families getting excited, there in the Kingdom of Emperor Thomas, there were no churches and the families hid in their homes, terrified. Terrified because they knew the Emperor could come for a round anytime. Emperor Thomas prepared his troops and the death march was on.

Quite early in the day, Emperor Thomas reached the street where John lived. The sound of trumpets and marching of soldiers woke him up. The army was moving uniformly when the Emperor ordered them to stop as soon as they reached John’s house. John was terrified, but the Emperor was stunned. The red rose was now in its full bloom, it was the most beautiful thing the Emperor had ever seen. And he fell in love with it. A love he had not experienced since forty years.

Emperor Thomas examined the rose closely, his eyes falling deep into the pretty red color and the aroma made him ecstatic. John couldn’t understand what the Emperor was feeling, but he felt a great fear inside his heart. He kept on moving away, while he was still on ground. And when the Emperor lifted his hand to touch the rose, John shrieked.
The Emperor could not touch it, as a thorn pierced his thumb.

He cried out in pain. A pain similar to what he had felt on losing his mother. All the memories came back, both the happy and sad ones. He realized he was wrong all along. Yes, love is poison, but a life without love is like death. He realized god exists, not in the Church, but in our hearts as love. It is love which exists as god and punishes us for sins and rewards us for goodness. It is love which exists as god and controls our heart, our mind and even our soul.

Emperor Thomas climbed up his horse, ordered his soldiers to stay and disappeared as he rode off. When he didn’t return for a few weeks it was declared,
“The Emperor has disappeared into infinity!”
